The Holy Gift of Paramaribo

The capital of Surinam is a pleasant and small city. One of the most notable sights of Paramaribo is a wooden Catholic Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul.
Just recently it had been restored and its gates opened for visitors again.

The history of the Cathedral is rather interesting. In 1821, during the fire, the Cathedral of Paramaribo was demolished. It was decided to get a new Jewish theatre and turn it into a new Cathedral.

It was ready and opened in 1826. But time was not merciful and the building became shabby soon, it wasn't safe to be inside... In January, 1st, 1883 an altar stone of a new modern Cathedral was laid in the same very place.

The construction took some years. Dedication of the Cathedral had happened even before the construction was over - on the 10th of July, 1885. The main altar was dedicated on the 19th of March, 1887.

The Cathedral was very interesting. Surinamers claim it's the biggest wooden construction in America and someone even believes - it's the largest in the world!

Wooden sculptures - scene from the Bible

It is truly impressive!

You may spend much time here staring at the decoration details.

Wood is everywhere! Even grids are made of it!
